The formidable pairing of Steven Craig and Stephen Gault stormed to an emphatic win in the A & N Carpets two man scramble. After nothing short of a woeful start when the category one golfers dropped a shot on the first, Stephen Gault holed his four iron on the following par five for a magnificent albatross two. They followed the albatross with a birdie two on the third to pick four shots against par over two holes! Craig and Gault picked up another three shots over the outward nine including an eagle on the eighth to post a six under par 30 at the turn. Things were a bit quieter around the back nine which they covered in 31 blows for a 10 under par gross 61, giving a winning nett score of 58.5. In second place with a nett 60.25 were Andrew Davidson and Des Keogh who had been club house leaders for most of the day. Unlike the winners, Keogh and Davidson had no dropped shots as they cruised round in 65 shots. On a day dominated by the Craigs, Stephen Wood and John Craig finished third with a nett 61.

Ulster Cup
Enniskillen Golf Club’s Ulster Cup run came to an end as they went down to last years beaten finalists, Edenmore. After the first leg at home the tie was finely balanced when Enniskillen bagged 5.5 of the seven points available. At Edenmore it was nip and tuck for most of the afternoon. With a half point secured it looked as though David Walker was going to get the win required to progress into the next round. However things just didn’t go his way and he was narrowly beaten.
Killadeas Cup
The first mixed trophy of 2009, the Killadeas Cup was contested on Sunday. Neil Ferguson and Pat Alston returned a useful looking nett 65.5 which appeared to be just enough to get their names on the trophy for the first time. However, it wasn’t to be the case as first time winner Helena Tisdale and the all rounder Dan McGovern just pipped them to the post with their nett 64.5. The pair couldn’t hide their delight at winning as Dan attributed their win to Helena’s confidence with the putter. Anne Reihill and Clive Boothe finished third with nett 66.5 and fourth saw another first time winner Joanne Bownes carry DT around the 18 holes for a tidy nett 68.5. Eileen Cochrane and Jim O’Kane took the outward nine with nett 33.5 and with a nett 31.5 Deidre Ferguson and Michael Lavin won the inward nine. The gross prize went to Gary Smyth and Kathleen Lavin with an 85.
Lawson Cup
John O’Neills Lawson Cup team knocked out Strabane for the second year running in another gripping contest. A solid home performance over the first leg a couple of weeks ago gave Enniskillen a realistic chance of going through to the next round. Against a strong Strabane side on the away leg last week, the result could have gone either way. But in the end, thanks to an all round team effort in which three of the four fourballs all secured points, Enniskillen came out on top with a comfortable win.
Phair Cup
Gareth McMorris’s Phair Cup team defeated neighbouring club Blacklion in the first round of the Phair Cup. A superb result at home two weeks ago when Enniskillen won by 14.5 points to 1.5 meant that, on paper the balance had swung in favour of Enniskillen. Nevertheless, knowing how resilient Blacklion are at home, McMorris fielded a strong side to ensure Enniskillen didn’t fall at the last hurdle. The pairings of Davey Truesdale/Brendan O’Neill and Eugene Donohoe/David Humphries did the business when they scraped up a few points over the front nine and ensured Enniskillen progressed to the next round.
Conway Cup
The Conway Cup team under the captaincy of Willie McBrien didn’t fare as well as the Phair Cup team against Blacklion. After a good away result for Enniskillen at Blacklion when the two teams halved the spoils at eight points each, a week later the home side were knocked out by 10.5 points to 5.5 points by a resurgent Blacklion team.
“Eggs”
With an impressive display of golfing prowess Benny Hunter racked up 23 points to win the Lady Captains prize for the “Eggs”. He was three shots clear of his nearest rival Pat McCaffrey who claimed the low section with 20 points. Stuart McIlfatrick’s 19 points was good enough to get second in the same section. In the high section it was Pat Monaghan who won with nine points less than Hunter.
“Leggs”
Ina Robinson won again when she captured the Lady Captains to the “Leggs” Ina’s 20 points was just one point better than runner up Kate O’Kane. Nineteen handicapper Doreen Cathcart put in another steady performance to finish third with 18 points.
